WELCOME TO LAMBERTS BRAKE & CLUTCH LTD
Lamberts Brake & Clutch Ltd in Whangarei, NZ, is a family-owned automotive workshop with a long-standing reputation for precision brake work, clutch services, and dependable mechanical expertise. Our business has supported motorists across the Northland Region for more than 70 years, and we continue to operate with the same values of quality, skill, and genuine customer care that shaped our early beginnings.
A FAMILY LEGACY BUILT ON SKILL, INNOVATION & COMMUNITY
The origins of Lamberts Brake & Clutch Ltd date back to 1947, when Arthur Lambert returned to Whangarei after wartime service and established a specialist brake workshop in Rathbone Street. At the time, brake wear was common due to unsealed roads, and Arthur recognised a need for specialised, safety-focused mechanical work. His decision to focus on brake systems, unusual for the era, became the foundation for a business built around precision, reliability, and trust.
Over the decades, the industry evolved dramatically. Vehicles became more complex, international supply chains transformed, and new materials reshaped how brake and clutch components were manufactured. Lamberts adapted to every advancement, gradually broadening its services while maintaining the same core focus on mechanical accuracy and customer confidence.

Arthur Lambert established a brake workshop in Rathbone Street after returning from service, using his mechanical expertise to meet a growing need for specialised brake repairs.
Arthur hired his first apprentice, Bruce Wilkinson, who contributed significantly to the growth and reputation of the business.
Lamberts became a member of the Motor Trade Association (MTA), reinforcing its commitment to industry standards.
To meet increased demand, Arthur built a new workshop on Port Road using timber milled from his family land, a demonstration of his resourcefulness.
The business relocated to Water Street, converting an old gasworks building into a functional workshop. This location remains our home today.
The first major workshop extension was completed to support expanding services.
Lamberts designed and patented its own friction material saw and dust extraction system.

A branch was opened in Kaitaia to support heavy transport operators across Northland, later closing due to economic shifts.
Friction material saws were exported internationally, beginning with Australia and Canada.
Lamberts began importing parts from overseas manufacturers, broadening product availability for customers.
We played a key role in forming the New Zealand Brake Specialists Association.
Multiple saw models were engineered and exported to more than a dozen countries, and the facility expanded with new machinery and a dedicated parts department.
The workshop added computerised roller testing equipment, expanded distribution into Auckland, and strengthened its national parts network.
Arthur Lambert passed away at age 94, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, innovation, and tireless work ethic that continues to guide our team.
